I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE AZTECS. THIS BOOK PROVIDES AN INTERESTING AND MORE BALANCED ACCOUNT OF THE RISE AND FALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE. MR.KOCH TAKES THE READER ON A JOURNEY THAT PROVIDES BETTER INSIGHT INTO THE MOTIVATIONS OF BOTH THE AZTECS AND THE SPANIARDS TO DOMINATE THE LANDS OF MEXICO.

Great story sloppily told

There is no denying that Peter O. Koch is a great storyteller. His newest historical novel is easy to read and offers interesting theories of the motives and actions of the main character of the tragic events in Mexico in the early 16th century. Despite the list of notes and consulted literature, it is certainly not a historical study. The author is shockingly inconsist in the spelling of names, not only Aztec names but Spanish ones as well (has the editor been asleep or what?) and his use of sources is dubious. He used William Prescott's more than 150 years old account of the conquest of Mexico as his most trusted source - as if historians have been in limbo for all these years. The second part of the title of his book is simply wrong, because it is not what the book is about. However, all these faults would be acceptable had the author gone through the trouble of studying the story more in depth. In particular his account of the amount of human sacrifices made by the Aztec is not based on facts and a repetition of a lie started by Cortes and his soldiers. If he would have read Peter Hassler's excellent study 'Menschenopfer bei den Azteken', he would probably have developed more sensitivity to the Aztec side of the story. What we are left with is a book that is entertaining but a mere repetition of many of the falsities that have been told in the last five centuries about the Aztecs as a bunch of murderers who seemed to have enjoyed ripping people's hearts out. The enormous atrocities of the Spaniards perpetrated during and after the conquest and the infectious diseases introduced to the continent have produced a number of casualties many thousandfolds higher. Maybe that is what Koch's next book should be about - just to restore the balance a bit.

Fun Book!

I had the privilege of being in Mrs. Wheaton's literature class at OSU. She had mentioned she co-authored a book with Fresch and I was interested. In this book you will find some very interesting information on the origin of words. This book is well worth the $11 or so to buy it. It also has some useful memorization strategies pertaining to words. Highly recommend!

Yes, Spelling Counts!

This book has a lot of etymologies for words and is helpful in grouping together words with similar roots. If students know these roots, they will have increased their vocabularies exponentially, and spelling will become much easier, too. The answer to the question, "Does spelling count?" becomes self-evident.

The Diabolical Agenda and its Continuing Reality!

Tavistock Institute, Social Engineering the Masses, is a chilling account of how a complex nexus of institutions spread and implement an agenda of social destruction through drug abuse, New Age mysticism and the occult, a brain washing mass media and a perverted Cybernetics programme. Tavistock itself was ‘Britain’s premier psychological warfare centre’, working in allegiance with some of ‘the world’s leading sociologists, psychiatrists and anthropologists, the so-called “psychiatric shock troops”’ of despair. There’s Nazi witch doctors, war, assassinations, a whacked out generation of hippies and now inter-generational drug abusers, the CIA and plenty of the cultured elite that go towards making up this hocus pocus. Daniel does a brilliant job in distilling the works of H G Wells, the Huxley brothers, Bertrand Russell and Carl Jung to name a few and that omnipresent family of evil doers masquerading as humanitarians, the Rockefellers, are never far away to offer an obliging sack full of cash. The aim? Global oligarchic rule of course! The means to that end? Undermine social progress and turn society against itself.

As a preamble, the Tavistock Institute was mentioned a long time ago by a blogger [and many thanks to them for bringing this up, since they are so vital to this abstruse topic], and that is how this subject came known to me.

But more sinister is the fact that this type of brainwashing begins when one ins young, and by it being an everpresent aspect of life, people see many [most?] of these things that entail mass manipulation as normal.

Tavistock Institute – Social Engineering The Masses by Daniel Estulin is as disturbing as it is comprehensive in scope. The book is a veritable top-down crash course into many of the most powerful aspects of social engineering of society.

This book by Estulin details many of the most sophisticated tools in a way never before done in any book. This alone in and of itself is power, because it allows the incisive/inquiring individual to do their due diligence in seeing what’s what in this esoteric subject.

Various topics are discussed, and spearheading the lot include the Tavistock Institute, the Nazis, MK Ultra, Mind Control, Music, Media, the killing of JFK, Drugs, and much much more.

More incisively, it touches upon “social turbulence”, which is whittling down the population through a variety of modalities, with increasing intensity, to soften up a population and lead them into psychosis.

There is also the aspect of disassociation touched upon from many angles

Estulin covers how victimology, which “is premised upon the theory that individuals can be put through trauma by being exposed to shockingly visual accounts of violence” [notice the rise of violence in TV shows?], has made its way in society. Also noted is what role in how Wikileaks is part of the social engineering agenda, and how that directly ties to mass media.

Mass media’s control mechanism is definitely sifted through with a fine-tooth comb, as well as aspects of it such as “idiotspeak”, which is when the media oversimplifies complex subjects so much, and literally covers them only in one or two sentences, that it serves to dumb down the population. An old computer book that still has some value

When this book was written back in 1994, it was more difficult to program fast graphics applications on the PC without resorting to assembly code that manipulated the hardware directly. That aspect of graphics programming has changed drastically, but the fundamentals mentioned in this book really haven't. You CAN still do things the way that they are described in this book, the question is SHOULD you do things this way. That being said, the book is a very good education on how graphics tasks are performed by the hardware in a PC. If you are interested in such things, the low price of a used book might make it worth it for you.

Chapters 2 through 5 equip the programmer with a thorough understanding of the EGA/VGA and the relationships these adapters have to other display adapters, the PC, graphics devices, and graphics software. A tutorial supplies a background in C and assembly language for the novice programmer. The graphics algorithms used in the program examples are introduced in the computer graphics tutorial. Chapters 6 through 11 specify the function of the EGA/VGA cards. These chapters offer clear and comprehensive information on the display modes, display memory, graphics processor, downloadable fonts, color processing, control registers, and BIOS calls. This information is translated into programming examples in chapter 12. Seventy program examples are included to illustrate the power and versatility of the EGA/VGA cards.

Chapter 15 provides a detailed look at the function specifications for the IBM Applications Interface. This interface is used on the Graphics Accelerator Toolkit that was available from the author at the time this book was published and was supported by the XGA, 8514, and many Super VGAs. I don't even know if it is possible to find this toolkit any longer. Chapter 16 provides an in-depth look at the XGA cards. Included are the relevant register definitions and descriptions of the graphics accelerator. The XGA is treated as if it were another Super VGA, which it actually is. Chapters 13 through 30 provide detailed descriptions of the Super VGA chips as they existed in 1994. The scope and depth of information here allows the programmer to identify which chip is present; control, configure, and fine-tune the chip; invoke the advanced display modes; access up to one megabyte of display memory; and control the start address and cursor.

A great reference for graphics programmers

Loaded with general graphics subsystem information, plenty of graphic theory and a ton of examples, this reference is a must-have for any serious graphics programmer. In the style of Richard Wilton's, "Video Systems for the IBM PC and PS/2 Systems", this huge manual provides a reference to almost every aspect of the graphics processing of the IBM PC. The book contains C and assembler source as well as a lot of sound theory. It is essential to you reference library.

good for old-school

Back in the day, this book was like the gospel of video cards, I got it cause I am old-school, I still enjoy messing around with VGA stuff. The information in it is all legacy and can be found around the net but its nice to have a printed book. I actually expected to pay $1.00 for it simply because all its information is legacy. I was surprised but happy to pay the $20.

About the Author

Ron Angus is a 5th degree black belt, who has practiced judo for 42 years and has taught and studied the sport in more than 15 countries. As a competitor, Angus represented Canada at one Commonwealth Game and three Commonwealth Championships, and he was a 10-time World Masters Champion. He has competed in 23 consecutive Senior Nationals, 22 Canadian Nationals, and one British National Championship.

As the New Zealand National Team North American Project coach from 1984 to 1996, Angus led teams to three World Championships and to the 1996 Olympic Games. In addition, he has produced both national and international champions in judo, sambo, and grappling.

Angus is currently a motivational speaker on the topics of fitness and mental well being for the Canadian-based Alliance Fitness Corporation. He is also a National Coaching Course Program (NCCP) instructor, the NCCP Judo Ontario Chairman, and a member of Judo Canada's Coaching Diffusion Committee, which shares coaching principles with fellow coaches.

Angus and his wife, Tracy, reside in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

Coaching for the serious competitior

I'm very impressed by Mr. Angus work. There is no book like this on the market. The author explains the training strategies that will take you to the next level, but contrary to other books, he gives you specific examples and a detailed break down.

This book will be worth to bjj players as well (I'm a bjj purple belt and occasionally judo player) because it addresses basics, yet fundamental, problems of competitors:

- how should I train out of season?
- how should I train in-season?
- how to peak for competition?
- what should I think during competition?
- what should I do when the fight is restarted?

There is also actual technique content, like the setups section, but the book is obviously more oriented on coaching. All this is very well done and organized.

Let's talk about the (little) bad:
- occasional not too serious spelling errors
- occasional annoying description errors (like left in place of right)
- the book could have been longer

Why I give it 5 stars?

This book is unique, it condenses in one place topics difficult to find and very useful for the serious amateur. The little problems don't really detract from the good content. I just wish the book was longer because some topics would benefit from an expanded treatment.

Recommended to the serious competitor.

The Best Fighter's Book Available

This is a book that every Judo and Grappling competitor/fighter needs. It focusses on the techniques and tactics that are most effective for winning, and most 'deadly'. The author uses his vast knowledge of and experience in Judo, Sambo and Grappling coupled with modern scientific analyses to construct a secure recipe for success. There is a vast wealth of knowledge poured into this volume, enough to more than satisfy even the most avid student of the combat arts. At the heart of the book are its winning moves: throws and submission techniques, each one categorized, analyzed, scrutinized, described and presented so as to enable the reader in the most efficient way possible to use them to defeat challengers. Every stage of combat is covered in great detail, as are strategies, combinations, fight-training, exercises, the psyche, and even how to use the referees and rules to one's own advantage. The style of the writing is very readable and interesting, so it is very much a book to be enjoyed. Besides Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Judo and Sambo stylists, Mixed-Martial-Arts competitors stand to benefit greatly from this book - to gain insight, skill and theory for their grappling game. Knowledge that took experts lifetimes to develop and test is presented here for us. For the grappler who wants to win, it is a definite must-read. Very impressive and hard to put-down!

Other Sports Judo Books Tap Out to Competitive Judo

This book definitely fills a void in the literature of modern judo fighting. I say "judo fighting," because there is little in current national and international competition that resembles judo as "the gentle way." Admittedly "gentle" is a misnomer for the term "Ju".

Written for elite players, a small niche audience here in North America, the book is a worthwhile study in training methods and strategies to be successful in the rarefied world of Olympic-style judo.

The author, Mr. Angus, goes into detail on the importance of knowing the rules of the game, and then "being able to use the rules to your advantage, how to develop a match plan with the skills that are right for you and how to get the most out of training."

Attention is given to grip fighting as one of the gates to winning. In my personal opinion, as a continuing student of judo with far less competition experience than the author (but with years of experience in judo), an over-emphasis on grip fighting is ultimately harmful to the sport at any level. The author underlines the challenges of grip fighting by including a photo of his hands after 30 years of fighting for grips. It is apparent that gripfights have taken their toll on his joints.

Overall, a very educational look at elite judo. One small suggestion for improvement in any subsequent editions would be to edit the Japanese judo terms: the frequent misspellings of the techniques are slightly distracting from an otherwise fine book. Recommended reading.

Good book.

The book starts out with drum-to drum (solo) type patterns (in triplet form). On page 13 (to the end - page 44) it goes into coordination-type exercises (similar to the Jim Chapin book); however, it is written in 12/8 instead of 4/4. This makes the exercises visually more complicated. The work in the first 13 pages is good for new students (who understand eighth-note triplets), the rest of the book would be more appropriate for intermediate students.
Of course, like the Stone book, there are many ways to utilize the material - it seems drummers are always finding ways to amuse and improve themselves...me included!

Might be unnecessary

If you understand how to use Syncopation (the original book,)
you don't need this one. This book takes only a small part
of the the original book and "arranges" it for drum set.
A good drum teacher can show you how to apply many "routines"
to the original book that will yield much more material for
drum set study than you'll find in Syncopation #2.

Top Notch - A Must for Surgeons!!

This new manual provides guidance to the key elements of surgical standards for oncologic surgery. It is really well organized and written. Each chapter provides a succinct summary of the evidence supporting recommendations. The evidence base for much of what we do as surgeons varies widely, and it is really valuable to have this clear source of the state-of-the art knowledge. The directives are clear, and the illustrations excellent. This will clearly become a standard for all surgeons to use. Highly recommended for practicing surgeons and trainees alike.

It is good resource. Well written with clear reasoning. My only criticism is I wish they had chosen melanoma or gastric cancer over lung cancer. As a general surgeon, I don't do major thoracic operations and I suspect most other general surgeons do not either.

The Beginning of a great adventure you will never forget

This book stands out above all the other Minecraft books, it is about a 4/2
foot tall Enderling who gets bullied in terrible ways, and begins a journey to return him, his best friend, his bullies, and all the Endermen back to The End after a mean prank and finding Ender Pearls from his crush after she dies. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

This is like the best book EVER

Well I love to play on minecraft and this kind of helped me grow my imagination a little more. I am only 8 but I have already built a whole city in mincraft. So this really helped. If you are/have a child and they play minecraft. You should really get this for them.
