About the Author
Anthony di Mari: Anthony Di Mari received his Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies from Holy Cross before completing a Master's Degree in Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
While attending Harvard, Anthony was awarded two travel grants, one to Pena Blanca, Chile to study fog harvesting, and the other to Japan, to research bamboo harvesting. Anthony has participated and been recognized in several design competitions. Most notably he received first place in his entry 'Urban Field' which converted wind power into electricity. His design for a plug-in community garden placed second in the Common Boston Common Build competition. Anthony's competition work has been featured online through inhabitat, Scientific American, CNN, and shiftBoston. His fabrication projects have been featured in exhibitions focused on the design process including Matter: design processes at the Bakery Design Collective in San Diego, California, and most recently GreeenHomeNYC's The new New York event. His professional experience in the field of Architecture includes collaborations with Peter Eisenman, Rick Joy Architects, RCR Arquitectes, Studio Luz, and Merge Architects.

An indispensible and accessible text on formal, spatial design ideas.

For design faculty, this is the kind of book that clearly demonstrates to foundation and core studio students the kind of conceptual manipulation they should engage in at the earliest stages of the design process. Students I have introduced the book to have, on the whole, responded well with clearer, more legible, diagrams of their formal site and building intentions. As a consequence, students were more adept at recognizing and illustrating their abstract spatial intentions, demonstrating increased critical thinking skills. Affordable and compact in size, the book should be a required text for foundation and core design studios.

What can we do to help?

Pastoral Leadership is a very good read. Most times when we think of the job Pastoring a church is it can overwhelm us. This book helps us as sheeps understand what we can do to assist a Pastor pastoring a church. By reminding him of what Jesus told the apostles to do and how Paul encouraged Timothy and others to do, we become understanding of the burden it can be. Therefore we learn to pray for our Pastors, and encourage them to teach and lead acording to the vision God has given them!

About the Author
Neville Wylie was Junior Research Fellow and British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow at New Hall and at the Centre of International Studies in Cambridge. Since leaving Cambridge in 1998 he has held positions at the University of Glasgow, where he was acting director of the Scottish Centre for War Studies, and University College Dublin and has been a visiting lecturer at the Graduate Institute for International Affairs in Geneva. He has published a number of articles in scholarly journals and is author of a forthcoming monograph on British policy towards Switzerland, 1939-1945.

A terribly biased study. The author dismisses as flawed all the studies that try to defend Switzerland or look at the historical context. On the other hand, the author is fully endorsing without any analysis or facts checking the most outrageous books (mostly written by polemicists, not historians) blasting the Swiss policies during the 2nd world war.

Enjoyable Graphic Novel

This is the second graphic novel adapatation of this story I've read (and know of 2 other), in addition to the paranormal/parodies) and definitely one of the better. The artwork is clean and easy to follow and the story a decent adapt from the novel.

As with any graphic novel from a literary source, you will lose quite a bit in the intricacies of the story. A very good artist gains it back with expressions and settings for the artwork. Here, I do still feel a lot was lost, hence the 4 rather than 5 star review. A lot of the art is just posing - really lacking body expression and facial emotion. The drawing is also very simplistic - no elaborate hairstyles and the fashions of the day are just simple empire gowns without texture or patterns. It felt a bit anachronistic as a result and I missed the Regency period feel.

But in all, it's a good adaptation, if a bit sterile.

When I was a kid, I really liked wrestling and The British Bulldogs (then WWF Tag Team champions) were my favorites. I had the official WWF British Bulldogs t-shirt, magazine articles and I'd tape their matches and promo clips off the TV. The Dynamite Kid was my favorite wrestler and it would bug me that he always seemed to be the one to get beat up in the ring until he tagged Davey Boy who'd save the day (the book will explain why that was). Once the Bulldogs weren't on TV as much, I lost interest in the WWF and moved on to the NWA, WCW, and then stopped caring all together. I looked forward to reading Dynamite's experiences and views in his own words.

When I started reading I wanted to call him the Trytowrite Kid as there are A LOT of typos--not so much misspelled words but extra words, as if the wording was going to be one way and it was changed but the extra word wasn't removed. Sentences like "you can see for yourself from the lads he that he trained" (5) and "we were sat in the bar after the matches" (66) are frequent. The editor must have been in a sleeper hold.

Dynamite doesn't share much about his personal life and views, he sticks mainly with his wrestling experiences and the pranks he pulled on fellow wrestlers. The book reads like Billington was going down memory lane while someone dictated. He'll discuss an experience and then jump into a prank he pulled as if he was just reminded of it as he was talking. I guess there is a charm to that style. His childhood as a fighting lad in a rough wrestling-based neighborhood in Wigan, Lancashire is briefly covered. The details begin with his training by Ted Betley in England, his move to Calgary to wrestle in Stu Hart's Stampede promotion, and his first of many tours to Japan.

He seems to be the most proud of his wrestling accomplishments in Japan where he respected the wrestling style and business more (although he was jilted everywhere) and where he had some of his best matches versus Tiger Mask. He gives his opinion on many wrestlers including the Harts (as well as the famous "Dungeon") and WWF stars, some of which he did not think much of which would eventually include his cousin and former tag partner, Davey Boy Smith. The WWF years were the most interesting to me because I was familiar with the names and some of the matches discussed. Some of the many names in the wrestling business he talks about include: Harley Race, all the Harts, Jim Neidhart, Terry Funk, Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, Nikolai Volkoff, the Iron Sheik, the Rougeaus (another favorite of mine--he couldn't stand them and Jacques let him have it), King Tonga, the Young Stallions Paul Roma & Jim Powers, Jesse Ventura, King Kong Bundy, Bob Orton, Ultimate Warrior, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Shawn Michaels, Sherri Martel, Elizabeth, Randy Savage, Paul Orndorff, Bam Bam Bigelow, Curt Hennig, Don Muraco, Nick Bockwinkel, Chris Benoit (who idolized Dynamite as a kid), Hercules Hernandez, Roddy Piper, Ted Dibiase, Greg Valentine, Brutus Beefcake, the Honky Tonk Man, Mick Foley, Abdullah the Butcher, Kobashi, Stan Hansen, Danny Spivey, etc.

He is also proud of the many pranks he played. He states he never hurt anyone with the pranks but, giving someone ten laxative pills, putting hair remover on someone's head while they were passed out, slipping someone speed, injecting cousin Davey with milk while saying it's steroids, and setting someone on fire at a McDonald's seems pretty extreme to me--but maybe they were tame by the wrestling world standards. He is also candid about his steroid use and other drugs. He doesn't sound like he is sorry for himself that he is in a wheelchair now. He realizes that he made choices that affected his future and is grateful for the 13 years in wrestling he had. He doesn't discuss the ugly parts of his home life that his ex-wife Michelle explains and that he admits to in a video documentary I saw. He does say that steroids can make one aggressive, but that was as far as it went.

I'm not sure if I respect Dynamite more or less after reading this book. He may not have been the nicest person, but, as a wrestler, he worked hard and did everything he could to put on a good show for the fans. Davey Boy Smith was not painted in a good light at all. He was described as spineless who couldn't make decisions for himself and who was afraid of getting hurt in the ring so Dynamite had to take the pounding. Later he is shown as someone who wasn't there for his cousin during his worst times, tried to boost his own reputation by putting his cousin down to his family members, and attempting to take away Dynamite's use of the name "British Bulldog." The infighting negatively affected the Billington/Smith families. Of course, Davey Boy can no longer defend himself as the book came out just a few years before Davey Boy's sudden death in 2002, but Dynamite pulls no punches and the stories are probably true--at least from his perspective. The book includes a small section of b&w photos--some not the best of quality--several of Billington post-wrestling. It would have been nice if there were more photos with some of the people he mentioned the most in his book. There is not a single photo of him with Davey Boy which, based on the sour way their relationship ended up, is understandable. While "Pure Dynamite" is not one of the better written books out there, if you are interested in the behind-the-scenes wrestling life during the breakthrough years of the WWF as well as pranks and jokes by one of the most respected wrestlers in the business, I recommend it.

Dark and brutal..

I remember being glued to my TV set every Saturday morning watching the WWF TV shows during the mid 80's when I was a young lad. There was an influx of new wrestlers during the WWF's "takeover" of territorial wrestling and one of the new faces was The Dynamite Kid.

Back then I didn't really know much about Dynamite except that he seemed like a nononsense type of wrestler with a rock-solid physique. Over the years as I became more educated about what really goes-on in a wrestlers life during his travels and leisure time I began to form a more complete picture of how complicated and troubled the lives of these wrestlers can be.

Dynamite is certainly the complicated sort who led a hard life both in and out of the ring. Dynamite paid a heavy price for his stardom and this book does a good job detailing all the dark and unpleasant moments during his legendary career.

I recommend this book for most pro-wrestling fans but especially for people who enjoyed wrestling during the 80's.

Hard Core

This book was simply hard core and one I could not put down. Plain and simple this book put all the other wrestling books to shame, with the exception of Roddy Piper and the late Freddie Blassie.

I myself was a fan of the British Bulldogs in the heyday of the WWF in the boom of the mid 1980s. After reading Billington's book the wrestling industry looks both corrupt and seedy. I most admire how Billington tackled the drug and steroid abuse head on and admitted that he and most of the wrestlers in the business used them under their own free will. Also, I think Billington's portrait of him living life in the fast lane as a wrestler should be a warning to the stars of the WWE today. They very well could end up in a wheelchair like Billington. At the beginning of his book Billington says eventually all the fame and fortune of wrestling ends. Careers don't last forever.

As for what happened between him and and the late Davey-Boy Smith I'm sure many would say no wrestling fans had any idea about the troubles those two had in the end. This book was both revealing and a true look into the dark world of professional wrestling. Hard core from beginnng to end.

Tom Billington thanks for the many memories in the ring and thanks for giving a glimpse into the seedy world of pro wrestling.

Read this book, especially if you have any ideas about becoming a pro wrestler.

About the Author

Elana Shohamy is a Professor and Chair of Language Education program at the School of Education, Tel-Aviv University. Her research focuses on language policy in education and societies within a framework of critical applied linguistics, specifically in relation to immigrants and minority groups, rights and activism. In the past few years she has worked extensively on the topic of linguistic landscape, specifically documenting the LL of Israel with its linguistic complexity (Ben Rafael, Shohamy, et al. 2006) and on topics related to language in the public space including LL of tourism and education. Her recent books include: The Languages of Israel (1999, with Bernard Spolsky, Multilingual Matters), The Power of Tests: Critical perspective of the use of language tests (2001, Longman); and Language policy: Hidden Agendas and New Approaches (2006). She is currently working on a manuscript entitled: 'In the name of language', examining among others methods of revival of Hebrew. Prof Shohamy is also the current editor of the journal Language Policy.

Durk Gorter is now Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of the Basque Country in San Sebastian/Donostia, where he carries out work on multilingualism and minority languages. From 1979 to 2007 he was a researcher in the sociology of language and head of the department of social sciences at the Fryske Akademy in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Since 1994 he has been part-time full professor at the Universiteit van Amsterdam in the sociolinguistics of Frisian. He has been involved in survey studies of the Frisian language situation and European minority languages, on which he has published numerous books and articles. He also does comparative work on the education of minority languages in the framework of the Mercator-Education project. He edited a book called Linguistic Landscape: a New Approach to Multilingualism (Multilingual Matters, 2006).
