Found late in my career, but not to late!

I have been consuling for 10 years. About 4 years ago I stumbled across this book. I bought it principally because I was going on a trip and needed something to read, I had no expectations. I was surprised to find a wealth of advise that I really needed to bring my consulting to the next level. Issues such as: Setting value based fees, building relationships, dropping the lower end of the business to make room for bigger opportunities and importance of self promotion through publishing & speaking.
The other thing I enjoyed is that Alan presents consulting as an honorable trade that can really help effect change and growth for our customers. If your a consultant, you should read this book! At a minimum your guaranteed to find a few useful points.

For the Lone Wolf

I enjoyed this book. As other reviewers have pointed out, a lot of
the advice given is just good ol' common sense for the professional
service provider in general (I can easily see some of the tips given
here being used by lawyers, accountants, etc to sell their services to
business). Plus, the idea of moving from hour-based billing to
value-based billing is invaluable. As a sole practioner, you can only
bill so many hours a day... but if you can add value and charge for
the value added... "ah, there's the rub." Alan Weiss here
provides a clear sense of the mechanics and operation of your typical
small professional services firm, with a well-written emphasis on
customer retention and relationship marketing.

Weiss gives no advice on growing a
practice into an organization that will outlive its founders. There
is only advice on improving your personal bottom line. In fact, after
reading it, I realize Weiss's formula for making a million is simple:
generate business revenues in excess of a million and keep expenses as
low as possible so that you can pocket the rest as dividends and/or
salary. That works fine for the individual practioner S corp / sole
proprietor, but what if you are already in the consulting business and
you are looking for ways to grow, add new services, increase firm
reputation, or otherwise move away from the lone wolf image? Taking a
million in dividends out of your practice each year doesn't leave much
for growth or future investment. What Weiss doesn't tell you is that
consulting (as opposed to public speaking, a distinction Weiss
sometimes forgets) is subject to economies of scale. That is why
formerly one-person shops like McKinsey are now huge global firms. Is
it better to run your own shop for 20 years, withdrawing all excess
earnings as dividends to support your lavish lifestyle or is it better
to reinvest most of those earnings by adding new services, increasing
clients, hiring more top-notch staff so that by the time you are ready
to retire, your firm is worth $30 million based on expected future
cash flows? Weiss wrote this book for the former, and gives little
advice on how to achieve the latter.

Excellent. Relationship selling and value pricing.

I guess the book can be summarised as having one underlying strategy of becoming a million dollar consultant, with many tactics in order to get there. Relationship selling is one tactic that is explained in depth because it is so different to the way most people sell. Value pricing is the other main tactic in obtaining this status. This books touches on so many aspects of consulting it is difficult to summarise everything. If you want to know how to start a new consulting business, how to set up an office, what equipment you should buy, how to market yourself, which groups you should join, how to work with and recruit sub-contractors, how to allocated project revenue between sub-contractors, planning, down to some ethical decisions, the book covers them all. If you want to become a well known speaker, writer or well know industry expert, this book discusses the tactics to get there. The one thing this book does not do, is tell you it is easy. To achieve these goals, takes dedication and persistence even during the tough times. What do you do when you are down to your last few dollars? Sell the furniture? No, there are even tactics to deal with this situation. I would recommend this book to all consultants and sales people. The consultants will get the most out of the book, and the sales people will learn a lot about relationship selling that is sadly lacking in most of the sales people I know.

Wonderful End!

I loved this end to a wonderful sequel. I was thoroughly entertained and loved each of the books for different reasons. I was glad that Ms. Beck gave this young man and this young lady a chance at a sequel. I purchased all the books in the series but was unable to review book #1 as it is no longer in paperback. I would have loved to review that book as it is EPIC. Very sad to have seen this happen. Great job on this one though! denise bailey

About the Author
Walter E. Kaegi is Professor of History at the University of Chicago where he has been teaching Byzantine, late antique, early Islamic and military history since 1965. He is the co-founder of the Byzantine Studies Conference and the president of the US National Committee for Byzantine Studies. Previous books include Army, Society and Religion in Byzantium (1982), Some Thoughts on Byzantine Military Strategy (1983), Byzantium and the Early Islamic Conquests (Cambridge, 1992) and Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium (Cambridge, 2003).

The Little Known Muslim Conquest of Byzantine Africa

This recently published book by Walter Kaegi attempts to piece together and explain the main events of the little known fall of Byzantine Africa to the Muslims. By and large, it is satisfactory, interesting and, at times, fascinating. Unlike the eastern provinces of the Empire, the conquest of Byzantine Africa took place over a period of more than 50 years. Understanding who lost North Africa and how was it lost is the purpose fo the book.

For both the Byzantines and the Arab Caliphs, North Africa was a secondary front. It clearly did not have the same priority as Asia Minor, Armenia or even Italy for the Empire and probably received reinforcements and financial resources only when these could be spared from the other fronts. It is even likely that both soldiers and taxes may have been drawn from the Exarchate to support these fronts, so that both the local population and the landowners developed a distrust for Constantinople that brook out into a major rebellion headed by their exarch Gregorios. It is this exarch with his troops, those of the major landowners and "Numidian" and "Moorish" horsemen who were severely defeated in 647 by one the first Arab attacks, with the rebellious Exarch being killed in battle. After that, coordinated and centralized defense seems to have broken down according to Kaegi, although local defense inflicted major setbacks on Muslim invaders on at least two occasions, including the episode of the semi-legendary Kahina. Little by little, the Muslims, who were intially relatively few in numbers and cocentrated on raids, overran the country. Carthage fell in 695 (and then again, and finally, in 697 after a failed Byzantine attempt to recover the city). However, local resistance continued with the Kahina until 698 or 703 (when she was killed) and may have continued sporadically after for another few years.

Kaegi does a great job in telling the story of the Byzantine demise in North Africa. One of his main qualities is to place it in the broader context of the struggle between the Byzantine Empire and the Caliphs, with remissions in the attacks on Africa corresponding, for instance, to the periods of civil war within the Caliphate rather than being attributable to any Byzantine success in North Africa.

There are however a few problems with this book. One is that, despite Kaegi's efforts, the sources are limited. At times, we have very little or no information. This is the case for the period between 647 (the death in battle of the Exarch Gregorios) and 669 (the assassination of the Emperor Constant II). To address this, the book explains the historical context at length, with a full chapter on Constant's reign and all of its historiographical issues. You almost get the impression that author is "padding" because of the paucity of the sources.

Another issue is the author's tendancy to repeat himself, a tendancy that goes well beyond simply summarizing whatever point he has made. So the same story gets sometimes told in different chapters and in a (sometimes only slightly) different context. At times, this can be a bit annoying and it certainly damages the flow of the story.

All in all, and despite it being very interesting, in particular when Kaegi compares and contrasts the fall of Africa with the resilience in Asia Minor, I was a bit disappointed by the book. To a large extent, this is because there is not very much to tell to begin with because the sources are sparse.

About the Author
Merrie Bergmann received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto and is currently an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Smith College. She has published articles in formal semantics and logic, philosophy of language, and computational linguistics.

James Moor received his Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from Indiana University and is currently a Professor of Philosophy at Dartmouth College. He has developed software for teaching logic and has published articles in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and computer ethics.

Jack Nelson received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago and is currently Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Interim Chair of the Philosophy Department at Arizona State University. He has developed software for teaching logic and has published articles in personal identity, epistemology, and philosophy of science.

Ideal for self-study

I must first give a huge thanks to the authors of this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) for writing such an elite introductory logic book. Now, there are two groups of persons whom will read this book. The first group consists of those who are required by their respective college through college coursework. The second group consists of those who are not required but nevertheless are interested in the subject. I belong in the second group. After declaring my major to be in mathematics, my degree plan required me to take an introductory proof course were the required textbook was "Mathematical proof: A transition to advanced mathematics" by Chartrand. The book just mentioned covers sentential and predicate logic in a mere 20 pages and somehow expected its audience to be expert proofers. I immediately ran to the library to seek for additional help in logic and ended up with the following textbooks at hand, "Introduction to logic" by Suppes, "Introduction to logic" by Copi, "Introduction to logic" Gensler, "Logic and Philosophy: A modern introduction" by Hausman, and "The Logic Book" by Bergmann. Out of the bunch, this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) drew my attention the most because its definitions were the most clear and every chapter had an outline summary. It also drew my attention because it covers metalogic, a topic not covered by the others. It took me about twelve hours to complete each of the chapter's exercises at a rate of 4 hours per day for a total of (12*11)= 132 hours of study time in 132/4 = 33 Days. Thus it took me 33 days to complete the entire book (11 Chapters). This book (the Logic Book) taught me how to convert an English argument into symbolic predicate form and from predicate form back to English. But the most important thing that the textbook taught me was to become an expert proofer in sentential and predicate logic, a skill require in mathematics(ZFC Axiomatic Set theory to be more explicit). I highly recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning how to proof arguments from a given set of assumptions. There is now no excuse for a person not to know logic, especially when this textbook exists. Consider buying a used 5th edition to save money. Good luck on your Journey!

I Bought a 4th edition copy of this same text for my sister and cost me less than $5.00 including S&H (See The Logic Book (4th Edition)). Futhermore, the 4th edition is 99.99% identical to the 5th and 6th editions and yet 99.99% cheaper. Now, it doesn't take a person to know much math nor much logic to know that the 4th edition is a heck of a better deal. The same table of contents of The Logic Book (4th Edition) applies to both the 5th and 6th editions. You're welcome!

Not a Classic for No Reason

It is unfortunate that Mr. Morriss had such difficulty with his logic course, especially since he is both a philosophy student and has been able to maintain a respectable GPA. As any student of philosophy knows, however, any one of a number of things could have brought about the 'D' on the midterm for the unfortunate fifty percent of his fellow students.
My experience with this text and (perhaps, therefore) with my undergraduate logic class in general was considerably more enjoyable than Mr. Morriss's experience. Certainly my professor was very good at presenting the material, but presumably he was not making up for a poorly written book. For, when I needed to consult the text, I found it actually to be quite clear and helpful.
Turning to the book itself, since I am not a fan of truth trees, when I have the opportunity to teach my own logic course, I will utilize proofs. I have viewed many undergraduate logic texts, and the proof method presented in this text seems the clearest.
Furthermore, as my logic professor told me and his professor told him: Logic is not in the head; it's in the fingers. Therefore, I think that the considerable amount of exercises contained in this text is greatly beneficial.
Third, definitions of terms and important points are presented clearly in text boxes throughout the book. Students will benefit greatly by committing these terms and points to memory.
Finally, although the price is prohibitive (hence, four stars), Bergmann, Moor, and Nelson's text has withstood the test of time. (In fact, the 4th edition is supposed to be out this summer.) Such evidence is not conclusive, but it suggests that perhaps lying behind Mr. Morriss's frustration is a cause more complex than merely this classic text.

Good logic book

I used this for my sophomore level logic course, as the previous reviewer. I do agree that trees get large, but I think tree is the right method for showing some statements are consistent, equivalent etc.
This book spends too many words (and examples) on the trivial issues and it is sometimes difficult to find the key points. I am very quick to get bored with trivial examples and tend to stop reading before I get all important points.
This book poorly utilizes graphics. I wish the book summarized key points using simple tables or lists. Perhaps you like to make your own graphic summary as you read (I did).
I give four stars because the coverage is good but not five because of the reasons I said above.

Wonderful Ending To Two Exciting Love Stories

I had been waiting for this book for a while. I can say it was definitely worth the wait. I enjoyed it immensely and found it a fitting ending for Dmitry/Royal and Anatoly/Renee (I would have said Gabriel/Bridget too but her reaction to an accidental run-in made me somewhat side-eye the character in the end). Loved the angst, the action and the layers. Good times. I totally recommend.

Have I mentioned that I would love to see this series as a movie, likely on Lifetime? Cause I really would.

Anyhoo, I'd read that the author will continue to write Medlov stories but for the next generation, so I am going to assume that means Anya and Alexandria, at the very least, will be getting stories. I'm hoping Gabriel might get a story too. =)

Dimitry is the Man

This book did not disappoint. I just loved it. I was so glad to see Dimitry back. He is the best. Loved seeing all three Medlov`s working together. I missed Dimitry so much. He is my favorite. He is the toughest Russian who ever lived. He and Royal never let you down. The love story is just as strong as ever. I was worth the wait. I love Anatoly and Renee. Gabriel became a real Medlov. Dimitry was at his best and having his boys beside him was even better. I loved the babies. Lil Anya is the smartest little girl. She is all Dimitry. I am selfish. I don`t want this to ever end. I never want Dimitry old. There is a lot more I could say. but I don`t want to give away any spoilers for those who have not read it. Getting to the end was so sad for me. I read as slowly as I could. Thank you so much for this awesome read.

Confusing time line and too many erros...the story was ok

I finish reading this book about a month ago. It was ok but it put me a weird place. This book was about The Medlov family after the birth of their twins and Anya getting kidnapped by someone who was extremely close to the family....sort of. So, the book before this was about Anatoly, if I wasn't mistaken wasn't Anya like 3 in that book? Now in this book she is 5 but the twins were just born? I don't know that time line is really off but anyways....There are some close members of the family that get killed and Anya is abducted...ok. Seems pretty good so far. You find out who takes Anya and why....fine. Then that's where the story is kind of lost....nothing ever gets resolved. I would have liked for some sort of resolution to have happened between Dmitry and his sister. Royal....I really didn't care about and at this point in the book she is like in her late 20's early 30's why does it seem as if she is being described almost as a middle age woman? I really haven't cared for her character since the first book. Anya was cute but ok. Like I said nothing really got resolved. Anatoly and Renee did have some sort of chemistry and Gab and Briggy were ok. Like I said I was kind of lost on this book. The books did get better after the first but just I don't know. When authors decided to bring up an important subject in a story and it looks as if they will explore it and they don't....they ruin the book. I.E. Dmitry and his sister.
