Clear, easy to read, great examples, good summary of theories

I purchased this book for a health policy class I took as part of a master's in public health program. I've read a lot of policy books and documents in my time and know the subject matter can be dry (even for someone who is interested in the topic). But this book was surprisingly easy to read and gave clear explanations for the many theoretical terms and analytic frameworks it went over. It uses a lot of real world examples to illustrate its points. It gives a broad overview of the different actors, frameworks, and decision-making factors that going into creating policy, with a specific focus on health policy. I enjoyed reading this book and felt it conveyed useful information for those wanting an overview of how policies are developed.

very good up to page 140 then thumbs down

Good overview of the special and general theory of relativity as well as quantum mechanics. No equations are used and the author is able to demonstrate these ideas very well.
However the author bias becomes very clear as he explains Bell's theorem . The author points out that no local hidden variable theory can explain the results presented by quantum mechanics. He seems to miss the point that quantum mechanics is NONLOCAL with or without hidden variables . He clearly is in the copenhagen camp but stresses that popular publications on the subject are incorrect in concluding that everything is indeterminate, after all, things such as mass,charge etc. are determinate.
The author seems to accept "in stride" the nonlocality in the copenhagen interpetation and then uses nonlocality as the biggest argument against the deBroglie-Bohm pilot wave interpetation stating that it is a "blatant" violation of the special theory of relativity. Apparently the instant collapse of the second wave function when the first is measured in EPR is more realistic in his view. He then corrects himself and states that it is really not a violation of the special theory "empirically".
These kind of inconsistencies and contradictions are rampant after page 140. In the end the best critisism the author could level at the Bohm interpetation is that it is "epistimological anti realism"
In summary his philosophical position of "realistic realism" ends up being that schrodinger's cat maybe both dead and alive but we know that it weighs ten pounds.

Excellent in its intended capacity as introduction...

I would imagine that the factor pivotal to appreciation of this book is the reader's stage of understanding of the issues discussed within this book.
Particulaly impressive was the conciseness and clearness of the explanations of both relativity and quantum mechanics, two subjects that I would imagine can be notoriously difficult to deal with when ill explained. Aside from aformentioned technicalities regarding quantum physics, perhaps the author could may have spent more time considering the epistemological issue of the very validity of, in particurlar relativity, the 'foundations of modern physics discussed'. They seemed briefly considered, yet tossed aside it seems due to the author's attitude that the apparent current non-existence of what may eventually supercede the areas of physics in question. So, basically, the book was themed upon evaluating reality using the best tools we have at this moment to evaluate what constitutes it.
None the less, as an indication of the perspective physics can provide as to the very nature of reality and existence, this book can be invaluable.

About the Author
Bettina Malle and Helge Schmickl graduated from the Vienna University of Technology in 1991 with masters of science in chemical engineering and received doctorates in technical sciences in 1993. They have published books and conduct workshops on the production of vinegar, distilled spirits, and essential oils, emphasizing the use of fruits and herbs right from the garden. Bettina and Helge have been married since 2002. That same year they moved to Klagenfurt, Carinthia (Austria), where they host their seminars and conduct research and developments in fermenting and distilling. They have two children.

This book is perfect for both beginners and experienced readers

This book is perfect for both beginners and experienced readers. All descriptions are easy to follow and are written from a practical point of view. Beginners will appreciate the instructions "Traditional Method" and "Simple Vinegar Fermentation". Both sections contain important tips how to improve the quality of vinegar right from the start of fermentation, without any analysis or calculation. Some tips were only known among professional producers for so far, the authors adapted these methods to household conditions - just by evaluating vinegar's smell, taste and appearance. Experienced readers learn from in-depth descriptions and more advanced instructions to receive fermented vinegar in an outstanding quality.
From my own experience I know it's not so easy to ferment tasty vinegar by yourself. I've read several vinegar books, none of them describes the whole process more structured. The authors point out all critical issues - source of alcohol, infections, plagues, storage, old mother-of-vinegar, etc.
The huge collection of recipes is amazing, for fermented vinegar (e.g., cider vinegar, aceto balsamico, etc.) as well as the usage of vinegar.

excellent textbook

The whole story is covered: theoretical backgrounds for alcohol and vinegar fermentation as well as easy to follow user-friendly instructions for both fermentation types. With this book my students are able to work independently, especially to analyse the acetic acid and alcohol content in vinegar with simple equipment. The broad variety of described analytical methods is amazing! Excellent textbook for an interested audience.

Paraphrased version

While it is my own fault for not examining the fine print, I was disappointed to find that this book was not the one written by Wilberforce. Rather it is a paraphrased version, containing a number of inappropriate word substitutes that alter the meaning dramatically.
I read "A Practical View of Real Christianity" by Wilberforce many years ago. This book is not that book. I should have been more cautious when attempting to purchase it again. Certainly the publisher could have been straightforward about who the author of this book is.

Authentic Christianity

William Wilberforce makes clear his intended audience are readers who perceive themselves to be Christians, people who attend church on a regular basis. Remember this book was first published in the early nineteenth century when the majority in Great Britain felt peer pressure to attend church on a regular basis. The book is a call for introspection: How will you face God after you leave this earth. The author makes distinction between the cultural Christian and to what he considers an authentic Christian. What constitutes authentic religion and authentic faith? Expresses a desire that Christians should have desire to know the scripture and have the ability to defend their Faith. Does one have a desire to be well educated over having a godly knowledge of the bible? Does one's desire for a place in society determines behavior and thought or does one's desire to grow closer to God? Wilberforce is critical of Christians who call Faith a private matter. As if it is something to be kept to oneself and not for public declaration. Does the individual feel this way because he is insecure in his knowledge of the bible, insecurity about his ability to defend his thoughts, or lack of faith in his stated belief? The author makes a distinction between being a moral person and a Christian, A moral person tries to do good things and avoid doing bad things. A standard set up by man not God.

Wilberforce argues that many a Christian have a misperception about the nature of God and the nature of sin, therefore they do not perceive oneself correctly before God. Christians do not take Satan serious and do not take sin serious. One finds oneself belittle their own guilt and not acknowledging the importance of the cross. The author lists the essentials of the Christian Faith:

Jesus came to earth to live as a human being, to suffer through the humiliations of being man as if he were a sinner, to die as if he were a sinner, to rise from the dead - so we can come with confidence to come to God for forgiveness for ones sins.

Jesus did not die on the cross so God the Father could have a more tolerant perspective about sin. Man is still worthy of hell. Man without repentance is doomed. Salvation is not about living a more ethical life. Salvation only comes from having an emotional response to a correct knowledge of one's own accountability to God and His hatred of sin. One is dependent on Jesus to avoid the punishment of sin. Behavior through the Holy Spirit will improve after conversion of Faith, but in way does the believer merit salvation.

Wilberforce goes to great lengths to express what it means to put God first in contrast an earthly attempt to be a good person, self-effort attempt to serve God, and a life lead by the Holy Spirit. Does one take doctrine serious; does one take the teachings of the bible to heart? Do you love God more than the acceptance of man? This perspective will effect how one budgets his time, use his Sunday. Does one grudgingly go to church then use the rest of the day for leisure or business? How does one study God's word, how does one worship?

The author goes into detail distinguish between man directed behavior and God directed behavior. A good reputation seeking God's will is something to seek, but one should be provoked to sinful anger or violence when one slanders you as a hypocrite. It is not the approval of man a Christian seeks, but the approval of God. Revenge and/or hate should not be a Christian response to slander or lies about ones Christian walk.

Wilberforce makes a case for a weaken nation because less people are authentic Christians. I find this regrettable because it seems to contradict his thesis about why someone should be an authentic Christian. The Author completes the book with a plea for the Christian to have a self examination of his Christian walk.

Yes, his efforts to end the slave trade and the movie Amazing Grace are two major factors in me seeking out this book.

Gerard Manley Hopkins is one of English poetry's most brilliant stylistic innovators, and one of the most distinguished poets of any age. However, during his lifetime he was known not as a poet but as a Jesuit priest, and his faith was essential to his work. His writings combine an intense feeling for nature with an ecstatic awareness of its divine origins, most remarkably expressed in his magnificent and highly original 'sprung rhythm.'This collection contains not only all of Hopkins’ significant poetry, but also selections from his journals, sermons, and letters, all chosen for their spiritual guidance and insight. Hopkins didn't allow the publication of most of his poems during his lifetime, so his genius was not appreciated until after his death. Now, more than a hundred years later, his words are still a source of inspiration and sheer infectious joy in the radiance of God's creation.

Deep in Genuine, Devoted Faith and Rich Writing

Hopkins is one of those poets hidden from so many because of his subject matter, yet is considered one of the most influential Victorian poets for his use of word combinations, meter and image.
Added to the delicious and poignant poetry is the contemplative nature of his prose and poetry. In it, you'll read about his humility and submission to God, his genuine faith, his desire that his poetry exalt God and not Hopkins himself.
Most his work was published posthumously, as late as 1920 or so, and immediately influenced the likes of T.S. Elliot (AKA, the guy who wrote the poem "Cats" is based on and "Wasteland") and his contemporaries.
While Whitman and Wilde were exalting in themselves, and just after Emerson and Thoreau were helping us see creation, Hopkins demonstrated prowess in pointing readers to see the Creator in the creation.
Atheists won't agree with him, of course, but he says it so well, they will at least go, "Hmm... if I believed, I could see that... yeah, wow, well put." The Catholics will cheer him on, "Atta boy... yep, that guy's a Jesuit!" Not undone are the Protestants who will be so impressed in agreement they'll be happy he was a Christian.
Check out this snippet from "Pied Beauty" "Glory be to God for dappled things--/For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;/For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;/Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches wings;/Landscape plotted and pieced--fold, fallow, and plough;/And 'all tra'des, their gear and tackle and trim." Those accents are in the original.
Delicious to say aloud? You should hear the second verse. His others are as tasty.

"The dearest freshness deep down things"

Hopkins did not create an enormous body of work, but what he did create was some of the most intensely powerful poetry English Literature has known. They are all here in this volume, poems such as " Thou art indeed, just" " Felix Randal, the Farrier",

" Carrion Comfort" " Binsey Populars" " God's Grandeur". Hopkins whose masterfully original descriptions of the natural world are second to none was one of the great innovators in the history of English verse. His development of the concept of 'sprung rhythm' return to the system of emphasizing the 'stresses' in verse is the key to this.

Hopkins tormented soul , his contention with his own despair are present in his most beautiful and moving poems.

A thoughtfully arranged collection.

Gerard Manley Hopkins explores his intuition, doubts and counters it with theology, only to find himself in a place of despair at the end of the process. Yet, I cannot read a Hopkins poem without feeling a resonance within myself, as I recognize truth and beauty. He shouts at the heaven's, and embraces the questions that keep him up at night. Tensions often seem high, as with "Thou Art Indeed Just," or "Nondum." The man pours himself straight out into his verse.

Just as Hopkins wrestles with the nature of God, so must a reader wrestle with this verse. There are instances when the poetry will open itself easily to interpretation, but most often his wordplay produces poems that are dense, and so loaded with implicit imagery that untangling takes time which many are unwilling to give. The first time I happened upon "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire," I was tempted to think Hopkins may have treated poetry more like an obsessive game with himself than a literary outlet. (If you've never read it, take a break to google it - you'll understand).

This collection, however, brings the works together into a wholly realistic format; they are not haphazardly assembled. It begins with some of his most well-known and treasured poems, like "The Caged Skylark" and "God's Grandeur." They are short and rich and accessible. These are then followed by a couple longer pieces. The poems continue in this sort of cycle - about six to ten easier poems followed by some more challenging works. It makes for a controlled flow, and prepares you for Hopkins' most ambitious poems, which are located at the end of the verse section.

On top of that, the cloth bound hard cover looks great with a sharp jacket to boot. This book is worth every penny! (Though I would suggest searching the used listings, as you can often find one in great condition for very cheap).

Since Bailey and Cushing (1926), all brain tumor classifications have been called histogenetic. Prognoses became more accurate, as required by the greater and more targeted possibilities of therapy.

About the Author
Anuja Chauhan went to school in Meerut, Delhi and Australia. She has worked in advertising for over fourteen years and has created many popular ad campaigns, including 'Nothing Official about it', 'Yeh Dil Maange More' and 'Oye Bubbly' for brand Pepsi. She worked in the advertising agency, JWT India, for over 17 years, eventually becoming vice-president and executive creative director, before resigning in 2010 to pursue a full-time literary career.

quite entertaining and a quick one-time read.

I had borrowed ‘The Pricey Thakur Girls’ from a friend and had enjoyed the reading experience of it. So it was a no-brainer that I would pick this book up too. Only this time I delved into the book with some expectations.

The Thakur girls are back and this book is all about how the family wants to sell the house that BJ built. While the central plot deals with that, there are parallel storylines involving the central characters. On one hand we have Samar’s journey of making a film and on the other hand we have Bonu trying to keep her promise to her late mother. And then there is the blooming relationship between Satish and Eshwari.

The many characters in the book play their roles to perfection. Some have grown over two books while some have been late bloomers. The characterization plays an important role in shaping up the book. It is the character relationship and interactions, the family drama and politics that keeps the book entertaining and going. Since Bonita comes across as the stand out protagonist in this book, I have to say that I had a love-hate relationship with her and Samar in the book. I oscillated between loving and hating them as the book progressed and they absolutely drove me nuts. The easy flowing Hin-glish language and a narrative style that oozes humour keeps a reader hooked to the book. Romance, Drama and Comedy fill the pages of this book.

Like I said, having read ‘The Pricey Thakur Girls’, I picked up this book with certain expectations. While most of them were well met, this installment doesn’t really live up to the mark its predecessor made. Still, it is quite entertaining and a quick one-time read.

Its makes for a fast but silly read!! Designed to a film but doesnt truly succeed!! Too much 'Alls well that ends well!! Read it at your own peril!!

I loved Those Pricey Thakur Girls and was really looking forward to this one. While Chauhan's writing style is as fresh and entertaining as ever, this book didn't really hold me. The plot was well crafted and fun, and as ever, even the smallest of characters was well-rounded.
For some reason though, it is hard to empathise with Bonu. She's a real character, flaws and all, but her choices and attitude didn't appeal to me and I don't do very well with books where I dislike the protagonist. Samar is the quintessential hero, honourable and decent. But I notice that many authors tend to make their women a lot more flawed (and even real) than their men. What is it that drives them to so? Is it only typical to women writers? I'm not sure.
All in all, a fun, quick read even if it's not up to the high standards that Chauhan has set for herself.
