Life in a small town can be tough when you're a little different, but for a fifteen year old transgender kid it can truly be hell. Clark is harassed daily at school for his effeminate behavior and appearance. He has no friends and a brother that is as likely to be on the teasing as to prevent it.

When Clark is offered a job babysitting for the Pirella family, it seems like a godsend. The money is good. He bonds with the girls almost instantly. The father, Tony, works in computer security. Tony and Clark strike up a friendship based on a mutual love of computers and hacking.

As Tony becomes aware of Clark's transsexuality and his growing feminine alter ego, Clarissa, things become incredibly complicated. Will Tony be Clarissa's salvation, or her undoing?

Run, Clarissa, Run
By Jenni French
Clarissa is a transgender teen who has been raised as a boy named Clark. [For the sake of consistency and simplicity, I am choosing to refer to Clarissa by her chosen name and preferred gender, regardless of her gender presentation.] Clarissa is constantly teased at school, often violently so, and is misunderstood by her mother, her brother, even her therapist. After some unfortunate incidents involving the father of a family for whom Clarissa babysits, Clarissa decides to run away to Bangkok where she hires a doctor and receives the SRS (sex reassignment surgery) that she has been dreaming of.

This story has a lot of interesting aspects - the computer hacking Clarissa does, for example. It also seems to me that Clarissa has to deal with a larger portion of problems than a typical teen - even a typical transgender teen - does. The man for whom she is babysitting seduces her and nearly rapes her (making her the fourth in a line of teens who were assaulted by this man). Once she runs away, the FBI and the State Department come after her. There's a subplot where Tony, her almost-rapist, is accused of insider trading.

This was a difficult story to read. I didn't want Clarissa to have to face SRS alone, much less in a country halfway around the world. I wanted the school bullies to learn not to tease. I wanted everything to end happily ever after. Even though it didn't, the story itself was very satisfying to read.

I have only one caveat: The author of this story self-published her work, so the book did not go through the normal round of edits that comes from a major publisher. English gurus and grammar nazis will be bothered by misuses of set/sat, then/than, apostrophes, commas, etc. The errors are not so extreme that they caused me to put the book down, but they were a distracting annoyance in what was otherwise a very interesting story.

Fascinating - Definitely worth a read
By M. B. Mulhall
A really interesting story of a transgender teen computer geek (hacker actually) who uses their smarts to escape bullying and a sexual predator. Definitely something different. It kept my interest and I finished it in a day and a half.

It could use some more polishing (spotted a couple of types and parts are a little jumpy...possibly fixable by using scene breaks so the reader knows to expect a change) but if you can look past that part, it's definitely worth a read.

Liked the story...
By B. Collom
I enjoyed the story, but all of the typos and grammatical errors were annoying and distracting. It really took away from my enjoyment of the book. I was able to easily spot a mistake on just about every single page. Since the author says this took her two years (and six drafts) to write, it seems like she should have had plenty of time to have it proofread and edited.

The Embodied Image: Imagination and Imagery in Architecture
Juhani Pallasmaa

All artistic and architectural effects are evoked, mediated and experienced through poeticised images. These images are embodied and lived experiences that take place in ‘the flesh of the world', becoming part of us, at the same time that we unconsciously project aspects of ourselves on to a conceived space, object or event. Artistic images have a life and reality of their own and they develop through unexpected associations rather than rational and causal logic. Images are usually thought of as retinal pictures but profound poetic images are multi-sensory and they address us in an embodied and emotive manner.

Architecture is usually analysed and taught as a discipline that articulates space and geometry, but the mental impact of architecture arises significantly from its image quality that integrates the various aspects and dimensions of experience into a singular, internalised and remembered entity. The material reality is fused with our mental and imaginative realm.

The book is organised into five main parts that look at in turn: the image in contemporary culture; language, thought and the image; the many faces of the image; the poetic image; and finally the architectural image. The Embodied Image is illustrated with over sixty images in pairs, which are diverse in subject. They range from scientific images to historic artistic and architectural masterpieces. Artworks span Michelangelo and Vermeer to Gordon Matta-Clark and architecture takes in Modern Masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, as well as significant contemporary works by Steven Holl and Daniel Libeskind.

The "embodied image" of Juhani Pallasmaa
By Manuel F. Lorenzo
Reflection about the city and the city's architecture is currently one of the most imperative topics, not only because of increasing population density, ecological or economical reasons, but also because of aesthetic and philosophical reasons. Especially since the irruption of the steel, glass and concrete architecture, called modern, of the Mies van der Rode, Le Corbusier, etc, which has evolved strongly enough since the second half of the past century, going from a plain classical Functionalism free of useless ornaments to the Mannerist turn of the deconstructive architecture, like Frank Gehry's, in which the Euclidean geometry of buildings starts to be twisted, curving and bending capriciously the walls, or to the post-modern architectonic baroquism in which ornamentation tends to impose itself over function.

In turn, a new critique seems to emerge from these late modern death throes that doesn't try to twist them capriciously anymore, causing a greater dehumanization of art, as Ortega would say, but that seeks to reject and overcome them in a vitalist return to the essential human sources that characterize us in a transcendental way, not longer as metaphysically idealized subjects and fully computerised, but as existential subjects, imperfect, finite and unpredictable, given in relation with a difficult and always dangerous surrounding natural world, since millions of years. Inside this new critique stands out strongly, since the last few years, the figure of Juhani Pallasmaa, a Finish architect of international prestige, who has started with a small book The eyes of the skin. Architecture and the senses (2005), and well received as a necessary lecture in numerous architecture schools around the world - a penetrating critique to the presently predominant architecture in the most developed cities over the world, characterizing it as a predominantly visual architecture, largely made to be looked at. This implies a predominance of image in this new spectacle architecture that converges with the so-called culture of spectacle, the politics that aim to take care of the candidates image, etc., characteristic to the late modern societies.

Pallasmaa's book was followed by other two books which continue and examine the critique to what the author calls architectonic "ocularcentrism", forming a sort of trilogy. This books are: The Thinking Hand. Existential and Embodied Wisdom in Architecture (2009) and The Embodied Image. Imagination and Imagery in Architecture (2011). This set of three books, conceived by the author itself as a triptych, as he points out in the Acknowledgements chapter of his last book, can be interpreted as forming a structure which exemplifies the journey that every theoretical philosophical reflection must do, according to the academic model established by Plato in the famous Allegory of the Cave: critique to appearances, exit of the cave searching the true foundation and return to the cave to reinterpret the appearances from the new point of view acquired with the discovery of the truth. The first aspect of criticism to the purely visual architecture of the city "for the eyes" is approached by Pallasma in The Eyes of the Skin. The way out of this deceitful and alienating world of the present architecture, that seeks to impact with pure imagery, is found, in The Thinking Hand, returning to a new explanation of knowledge developed by contemporary philosophers like Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre or Lakoff, that remits to the body and, more precisely to the manual actions, to the Heideggerian "ready to hand", as original source of our immediate relation to the world.

His third book, The Embodied Image. Imagination and Imagery in Architecture (John Wiley & Sons, London, 2011), which culminates the triptych, deals exclusively with the production of images in the present city's architecture reinterpreting the artistic world of image, not visually, substantially and exempt from the rest of the body, but in its necessary connection with the corporality of the subject that creates, or the one who is merely a receptor or spectator of the art that inhabits the city and its sophisticated architectonic buildings. After the rejection and critique of the ocularcentric imagery, which causes the departure of the deceitful world characteristic of Plato's cave and the ascension to the manual hapticity, as the very Platonic "Sun" revealer of our true human condition, Pallasmaa is able now to develop a new liberating point of view. Such a point of view is substantiated in the systematical proposal of constructing a new image of the city, an "embodied image" that doesn't lose its own existential roots in the manual hapticity. As the author itself writes:

"This book was written with the belief that we can liberate and sensitise ourselves through a re-mythicised and re-poeticised understanding of the world, and that human imagination is autonomous, self-generative and limitless. It is encouraging that during the past few decades, scientific imagery seems to have approached poetic imagery, and vice versa. We live in an imaginative world -or worlds- of our own making, and the future of humanity rest entirely on our capacity for imagination. The following chapters analyse the essence of the mental image and imagination, and suggest ways in which we might go about re-rooting the art of architecture in its existential soil" (Pallasmaa, J., The Embodied Image. Imagination and Imagery in Architecture, John Wiley & Sons, London, 2011, p. 24).

To do so, the author carries out in the first chapter an analysis of the image's hegemony in contemporary culture, in which he repeats his diagnosis about de predominance of ocularcentrism in publicity, the numbing and loss of imagination, in the spectacle architecture, etc., with the consequent loss of the sense of reality. In the second chapter we find an analysis of the relation between images, language and thought, in light of new knowledge, like that provided, e.g. by linguists like George Lakoff, with his revaluation of the body's role in the metaphorical images that configure our way of thinking or the advances of neuroscience concerning the localization of the brain functions connected with the verbal and plastic images:

"The relationships and interactions between imagery and language, perception and thought, are fundamental to the understanding of the human mind and creativity. In the past, the prevailing views of language neglected the role of images. During the last few decades, however, psychological and psycholinguistic experiments have revealed and proved the crucial role of the mental images, or neural representations, in language and thought. These views have a crucial significance especially in the philosophies and methodologies of education" ( Op.cit., p. 26).

In the third chapter, the longest in the book, he addresses the multiple types of images (images of matter, multi-sensory, condensed, archetypical, unconscious, metaphorical, empathetic, incomplete, illusory, iconic, epic, poetic images as worlds, etc.) trying to understand what actually happens in the process of imagination, specially when viewed from the new manual bodily perspective, that is, from the new perspective of analysis achieved with the notion of a "lived and embodied image":

"The notion of the image is commonly attached to a schematised visual representation or picture. Yet in our mental life, we constantly deploy mental or imaginary images. The crucial faculty of the image is its magical capacity to mediate between physical and mental, perceptual and imaginary, factual and affectual. Poetic images, especially, are embodied and lived as part of our existential world and sense of self. Images, archetypes and metaphors structure our perceptions, thoughts and feelings, and they are capable of communicating messages of deep time as well as mediating epic narratives of human life and destiny" (Op.cit, p. 40).

In the fourth chapter he tries to carry out an anatomy of the poetic and creative image, considering that in such images two realities coexist simultaneously, the physical and the "unreal" caused by the imagination. In such sense, according to Pallasmaa, it is necessary to bear always in mind this duality without reducing the artistic experience to something merely physical or visual. Therefore,

"The mental or lived image is a central notion in all the arts, although neither artists nor theorists often allude to it. When mentioned, the word `image' usually refers to purely perceptual or visual phenomena. However, the image is the experimental entity, the synthetic perceptual, cognitive and emotional singularity of the artistic work that is perceived, embodied and remembered" (Op.cit.,p. 93).

In the fifth and last chapter, he deals specifically with the image in architecture. His essential idea is that architecture's authentic experience is not a purely visual or gestaltic experience, in the way that the dominant Post-Bauhaus fashion suggests, but rather:

"....confrontations, encounters and acts which Project and articulate specific embodied and existential meanings. A building is encountered, not only viewed; it is approached, confronted, entered, related to one's body, moved about, and utilized as a context and condition for activities and things. A building directs, scales and frames actions, interrelations, perceptions and thoughts. Most importantly, it articulates our relations with other people as well as with the `human institutions', to use a notion put forward by Louis Kahn. Architectural constructions concretise social, ideological, cultural and mental order by giving them metaphorical material form" (Op., cit., p. 124).

Lastly, we will only refer here, to end this brief review, to what Pallasmaa considers the most primary images of architecture:

"In the order of their ontological emergence, the primal images of architecture are: floor, roof, wall, door, window, hearth, stair, bed, table and baths. This view significantly assumes that architecture is born with the establishment of the floor, a horizontal surface, rather than the roof. As was pointed out earlier, profound architectural images are acts rather than formal entities or objects. These entities permit and invite: the floor invites movement, action and occupation; the roof projects shelter, protection and experiences of insideness; the wall signifies the separation of various realms and categories of spaces, and it creates, among other things, privacy and secrecy. Each one of the images can be analysed in terms of its ontology as well as its phenomenological essence.

Architectural experience arises ontologically from the act of inhabiting, and consequently, the primal architectural images can be most clearly identified in the context of the house, the human dwelling" (Op. cit., p.129).

To conclude, Pallasmaa's proposal, in this third book, falls within the consideration of the architectonic images, or artistic in general, not anymore as substantial entities or purely visual representations, but as embodied images, given in their genetic relation with very complex actions, understudied to date, of bodily organs, obstinately relegated in such a sense, like our own hands.

Who Was Adam: A Creation Model Approach to the Origin of Humanity, by Fazale Rana, Hugh Ross

Who was Adam? Was he the result of still ongoing natural processes or a unique creation?

Observations seem to validate at least some aspects of evolutionary theory, but long before Darwin a man named David discerned that there's more to humanity than nature alone can account for.

In the original publication of Who Was Adam? (2005), biochemist Fazale Rana and astronomer Hugh Ross discussed cutting-edge research in junk DNA, the human fossil record, human and chimp genetic similarities, and more. They proposed a new scientifically testable model for human origins.

This robust 10-year update provides rigorous testing of the evolution and creation scenarios. New discoveries in genetics and paleoanthropology, especially, provide helpful evidence. How has RTB's biblically aligned model for human origins fared? Can human evolution be declared a fact? Or does a creation model make more scientific sense?

Groundbreaking Study in Human Origins
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom
Ten years ago, the first edition of this book became one of the most thorough treatments of one of evolution's most serious problems: The origins of man. For decades, evolutionists have tried to piece together nonsensical claims from bone fragments, talk around the genetics that point away from common ancestry between humans and other hominids and so on. Rana and Ross pulled together the science and proposed a new scientific model. The level of science was unheard of in "creationist" circles and the model was something not even design theorists have managed to do. Since 2005, the discoveries and advanced in genetics, fossil finds and related fields has been immense. Anyone who thought little was left to learn were quite surprised at the past decade. This new edition adds those new finds, debates and conclusions. They also analyze where their model was correct, wrong and needed adjustment. They don't fear controversy and rational debate. This sets them apart from many evolutionists and creationists who refuse change no matter the evidence and replace the scientific method with personal philosophy. Truly a top shelf study on human origins, regardless of one's starting point. See also The Cell's Design, Origins of Life and Signature in the Cell.

Worth Reading the Update- Some Questions Remain
By J.W. Wartick
Who Was Adam? by Fazale Rana with Hugh Ross is a major work on human origins from the group Reasons to Believe, an Old-Earth Creationist think-tank. This edition, the 10-Year Update, features over 100 pages of additional material analyzing recent discoveries.

The book is organized in such a way that the first two parts are the original book, while the third part is all new material and analysis. Rana and Ross do an admirable job surveying an immense amount of scientific material related to human origins. They present what they argue is a scientific, creationist model (called the Reasons to Believe model [hereafter referred to as the RTB model]) on human origins. This model includes predictions and testable hypotheses. For example, one of the main predictions is that humans–homo sapiens sapiens–are utterly unique and that their cultural capacity will turn out to be unmatched. Thus, any alleged ancestors of humans will not demonstrate continuity of culture and the like.

They take as confirmation of this prediction the notion that biologists have not managed to put together a solid order in which to place the fossils that are alleged to be human ancestors. Without any such family tree that can be confirmed, the notion that humans evolved, Rana and Ross argue, remains a theory and the question of human evolution is not a fact. They conclude this after having looked at a number of major fossil finds while identifying difficulties with dating them, difficulties with taxonomy and identification, and more.

The updated portion of the book is significant. Those wondering if it is worth getting for this update should know the answer is in the affirmative. There are over 100 additional pages filled with analysis of more recent discoveries and how they impact the RTB model of human origins. To their credit, the authors frankly admit areas in which their predictions were mistaken or their model is challenged. Perhaps the most interesting section is that in which Rana and Ross analyze various behaviors thought to be evidence of early culture among hominids and the like (chapter 23). They show that these behaviors might be anthropomorphism of animal behavior. The chapter on junk DNA shows how scientific discovery has confirmed one of the predictions of the RTB model, and the concluding pair of chapters analyze arguments for and against the RTB model and its viability.

One critique I have is particularly evident in the original work (not in the expanded materials, though), is the occasional use of pure rhetoric to try to make a point. For example, in discussing hominid and homo fossils, Rana and Ross argue that the connections between these fossils has not been established. They therefore conclude that “Without these connections, human evolution cannot be declared a fact but remains a theory” (42). I find this type of wording unfortunate.

Some of the other reasoning behind the RTB model seems possible to go either way (i.e. towards evolutionary theory or the RTB model). For example, Chapter 6 outlines a number of conditions which are to demonstrate humans arrived at the just-right timing for human civilization to flourish–something the RTB model would predict. On the other hand, the authors state the evolutionary model would not necessarily predict this. However, it seems that–from my admittedly limited understanding of biology–the evolutionary model would also predict something similar because life adapts so well that if there was a “just right” circumstance for a type of life, that life would be selected for. Whether this is accurate or not is a different question (and whether I have it right), but it doesn’t seem like this is necessarily evidence for RTB over and against evolution.

The difficulty of evidence that could go either way is one of the biggest difficulties throughout the book. Arguments are often made that because the RTB model allows for a specific piece of evidence, that means that the RTB model is still viable. But there is a difference between confirmation of a model and lack of disconfirmation. It would be more reassuring to have more specific scientific evidence in favor of the model rather than simply being able to be subsumed into it.

At times I also wondered whether certain aspects of the RTB model were necessary for them to defend. For example, the insistence on reading the ages of early humans in the Bible as literal periods in which humans lived for 900+ years. They acknowledge in the expanded section that there has yet to be confirmation of this and that findings so far challenge this idea, yet they continue to hold it as part of the model. I can’t help but think it is a superfluous part that doesn’t actually contribute much to the overall workings of their model.

Who Was Adam? is a significant work worthy of a careful reading by any interested in Christian perspectives on human origins. It provides Christians insight into an Old Earth Creationist perspective on human origins, while also providing enough raw information for readers to draw their own conclusions and formulate their own ideas. It will challenge Christians on their thinking and perhaps force people to re-evaluate their own theories. It is a valuable resource despite having what I see as some difficulties throughout. It is recommended.

The Good

+Frank evaluation of own model after 10 years
+Offers much insight into research of hominids
+Plenty of data means readers can form their own conclusions
+Genuinely valuable update with much new material

The Bad

-Some unfortunate reliance on rhetoric
-Methodological concerns

Adam and Eve existed
By Craig K. Jackson
This is an excellent update of the previous book (same title) published in 2005. Instead of revising the previous book, the authors have added additional chapters in which they discuss new scientific findings and research in the past 10 years.

Their "Creation Model" (emphatically NOT "young-earth creationism") is worthwhile reading for anyone in search of the truth about human origins. It reconciles scientific findings (paleoanthropology, genetic studies of DNA and mtDNA, etc.) with a rational biblical explanation model.

Johnny and Rich are back! This book is great!
By Claudia Polydoro
http://bikebookreviews.blogspot.com.br/2015/11/my-herothe-olympian-release-day-blog.html

When I reviewed the audiobook version of My Hero and Max told me he was working on it’s sequel, I got really thrilled.

I fell in love with Johnny and Rich at first sight. How they faced their own fears and insecurities to be themselves and to be together, so I was sad when the book ended but so happy when I got to see more of them.

In My Hero: The Olympian, we get more of Johnny sassiness (Oh my, I so love his sense of humor), and more of sweet Rich, while they go through the harshness of reality intruding into their dream world.

Being “Out and Proud”, especially for a football player, is not as easy as Johnny thought… he has to face hate, prejudice and anger from people he should be able to trust.

What I love most in their story is the lengths each of them are willing to take for the other, for their love and happiness. They have grown so much from the first time they met…

Rich is focused on his Olympian dream, but now, having Johnny’s love as his anchor, he can put all his priorities into perspective… something that he never realized was missing in his life… And I loved seeing more of Dan, Johnny’s parents and Virgil, they are truly special and supportive, and such a great addiction to the story.

Thank you Max for giving life to these sweet guys that have stolen a piece of my heart. Their story made me laugh, giggle, sigh and have a really great time.

Don’t miss this great book!

What was great to see
By DPiazzi
I was really excited to read and review My Hero: The Olympian after reviewing the audiobook for My Hero. At the end of that book, Johnny and Rich had just got back together after a slight pause in their relationship. Johnny had always been straight before running into Rich at college and becoming friends. Rich had once saved him from drowning and it earned him Johnny’s unwavering friendship, but Johnny soon realized that he was attracted to the person Rich was. Rich was gay so it didn’t bother him at all to have feelings for the man who he rescued years before, but Johnny had to come to terms with what it meant for him and for his football career. There was a fight, a misunderstanding, and a betrayal, but the two made it through it and this book takes place right after they make up. To read my review of My Hero click here.

This book primarily follows Rich and Johnny as Rich works his way to the Olympics as a diver for Team USA. Rich has had this goal for a long time but tended to be too stressed out and over trained, causing him to fail. But this time he is secure in his relationship with Johnny, he has strengthened his relationship with his dad, and he has a whole bunch of new friends supporting him. However, things aren’t peachy keen. He and Johnny become the targets for homophobic bullies. Throughout this, though, Rich remains strong.

What was great to see, was how much the characters developed in this book. Everyone became stronger, and relationships formed in unlikely places for Rich’s dad, also for a friend, Virgil, who I really liked in the first book. Anita, Johnny’s cousin, and Ruthie, Rich’s best friend, also meet and fall for teammates of Johnny. Rich and Johnny already have solid feelings of love, mutual respect, and sexual attraction. That sexual chemistry leads to many funny scenes while at the World’s and the Olympics. There was a lot of sex in this book, I’ll admit. But personally, each time, I saw the relationship strengthen because of it. Their shared love of food sex, of handing over control to the other, and of pleasuring the other, deepened their feelings of love.

The epilogue of this book was one of my favorites. It paints a picture of the life that Rich and Johnny create after Olympic and NFL careers. The amount of genuine caring between them made my heart skip a beat. I love the way they loved each other and how they liked to give back to the community after all their experiences. All their successes brought them joy, but they wanted to share it, instead of becoming wealth obsessed snobs. There is little angst and though I like that sometimes, this was a story of a beautiful story and it left me with a “feel good” feeling. I definitely recommend it.

Enjoy gay-for-you college jock stories?
By Alicia Nordwell
My Hero: The Olympian is for you! But it's more than that too. Reading this book was a roller coaster for both the personal and professional journeys of the main characters, Johnny and Rich. The story begins immediately after My Hero, and the cast continues to feature the two main characters from the first book as well as most of the secondary characters that make up Johnny and Rich's family and close friends.

We do get to meet quite a few more people in their lives, though, as Johnny's relationship with Rich fully comes to light after his blow up in the first book. He's a college football player, and even in modern times, not everyone is accepting, especially in a sport where there's a lot of testosterone flying around the field and locker room. That leads to a lot of drama, which drives a lot of the events in the book.

The second main element of the book focuses far more on Rich's journey to... you guessed it, the Olympics. For all that is going wrong in his life, he's experiencing something exactly right. His diving is spot on, and he's focused in a new, loose way that has escaped him in the past. His relationship with his dad is on the mend, even.

But everything Johnny is facing affects Rich, too. Can they overcome the danger them personally and professionally, keep Rich diving, and get through all the drama of the Olympics? With twists and turns that keep you guessing, this book makes the path to the end unpredictable. I must mention the editing isn't great (the habit of using mom/dad instead of Mom/Dad when being used as a name and some homophone issues and missing punctuation jumped out the most) but it's not so bad to keep a reader from enjoying the story. For those who read My Hero and hated the cheating scene, I will say this does NOT get a repeat in the sequel.

Overall, a good read, especially for a popular genre that can often feel far more formulaic than fresh.

Don't Build Home Without It!
By E. Ingraham
Well written, and quite valuable. Very detailed as the topic is technical, yet also readable. VERY useful information it would take a while to find yourself. I would have liked to have some of the information in front of me before I purchased land there. As for building, its very local specific, for Thailand, and some region specific info also. Thats a good thing....

I'd say "Dont Build Home Without It," to play on the AmEx slogan (not that I have any fondness for those corporates....:). I wont. Many of the details here you will likely be faced with at some point, in a relatively complex place (land ownership, etc). The experiences (and knowledge) of others is an invaluable gift. It helps if you can also write, which he can.

Highly recommended, as is his other book (with Thai co-author), Retiring in Thailand. If you plan to do this also, it will save you (and will me) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Also very detailed yet readable. In my experience (Belize, Panama) its some of the best of the genre. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!

Excellent book on Building a House in Thailand!
By James H. Cogan
Mr Puterbach's polemic against "How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand"

has almost NOTHING to do with the book he pretends to be reviewing.

Yes, "stuff" happens everywhere, all the time. But if you are dumb

enough to put your newly built house in the name of a nearly broke single mother

you just met in a bar, you are likely not bright enough to be building

a house on your own in another country to begin with!

Having said that, I found Mr Bryce's an EXCELLENT book on the pros and

cons, the risks and rewards of building a house in Thailand.

I personally found his experience and information invaluable, and would

STRONGLY recommend you not even consider building a house in Thailand without reading this book first!

There are indeed many complexities involved, and this book is the easiest

way thru the challenges you will indeed encounter.

You CANNOT legally own land in Thailand
By Kevin M. Lovegrove
I don't care what hoops you go through, what companies you set up, or any other amount of subterfuge you may try.

FOREIGNERS CANNOT OWN LAND IN THAILAND. That is the law, it's as simple as that. And more to the point, Thailand's legendary instability means that even if you have "protected yourself" they can change the goalposts in a heartbeat.

This book should have a massive disclaimer at the beginning reminding people of this simple fact.

Lease by all means; at least if the Thais decide to screw foreigners (which they do with monotonous regularity), you have less to lose.

And there are so many nice properties, especially in the North, this is probably the way to go (especially if you are retiring there).

This is not being negative, I visit Thailand regularly, but you cannot gloss over this simple fact of law and pretend the risk is not there.

Cold War Anthropology: The CIA, the Pentagon, and the Growth of Dual Use Anthropology, by David H. Price

In Cold War Anthropology, David H. Price offers a provocative account of the profound influence that the American security state has had on the field of anthropology since the Second World War. Using a wealth of information unearthed in CIA, FBI, and military records, he maps out the intricate connections between academia and the intelligence community and the strategic use of anthropological research to further the goals of the American military complex. The rise of area studies programs, funded both openly and covertly by government agencies, encouraged anthropologists to produce work that had intellectual value within the field while also shaping global counterinsurgency and development programs that furthered America’s Cold War objectives. Ultimately, the moral issues raised by these activities prompted the American Anthropological Association to establish its first ethics code. Price concludes by comparing Cold War-era anthropology to the anthropological expertise deployed by the military in the post-9/11 era.

Review
"Once again, David H. Price proves he is anthropology's conscience. In a time that the human sciences are being compromised by revelations of their complicity with some of the worst practices of a national security state and a phony 'war on terror,' Price's work stands as a moral and political compass. It stands as a caution and a guide to research because of Price's remarkable accomplishment in making a persuasive case for ethical action the logical conclusion of serious scholarship." (Marshall Sahlins, author of Confucius Institutes: Academic Malware)

"Cold War Anthropology is a major accomplishment that reveals a largely hidden and strategically forgotten aspect of American anthropology: the complex and contested interactions between anthropologists, the Pentagon, and the CIA during the early Cold War. David H. Price contextualizes longstanding anxieties in the discipline about the nature of its knowledge production, the militarization of ethnographic work, and the status of anthropology as an independent social science. The intellectual stakes of this meticulously researched work could not be higher." (Joseph Masco, author of The Theater of Operations: National Security Affect from the Cold War to the War on Terror)

"Others have written on the entanglement of the social sciences with the military-intelligence complex, but none as energetically, from as many angles, or with as sensitive an eye for connections and overarching themes. ... ? Just as [Price] insists that HTS matters less than the underlying trends it represents, he cares less about the dramas of individual anthropologists in Cold War Anthropology and more about the subtle, systemic changes throughout the field—changes that threatened to make the discipline itself a security-state collaborator, sucking in individual researchers without their full knowledge." (Peter C. Baker The Nation 2016-06-16)

"In the course of twelve years Price has written three books which have helped redefine anthropology’s understanding of itself. And now, with Cold War Anthropology, Price brings his massive, precedent-make (and -busting) history of anthropology and American power to a close. It’s a defining moment in the history of anthropology, and deserves wide attention. . . . We have much to learn from our discipline’s recent past, and thanks to David Price we have the opportunity to see our field as it really was, warts and all. The stories in this book, and the issues that it raises, need to be discussed by the discipline as a whole." (Alex Golub Somatosphere 2016-06-21)

"Readers will benefit from Price’s careful attention to the impact of funding streams on scholarly decision-making, his dedication to amassing hard-to-locate source material, and his cogent moral compass."   (Margaret Flood History of Anthropology Newsletter 2016-07-08)

"Cold War Anthropology restarts a conversation that should have never stopped. Anthropologists unaware of their discipline’s history will nodoubt find its lists of CIA and military projects eye-opening. Veterans of campaigns to rid the discipline of ties to the military and intelligence agencies will appreciate its recounting of battles lost and won within the AAA. Historians of science, too, have much to learn from the book’s methodology, especially its use of FOIA applications and tracings of blown CIA fronts." (Audra Wolfe Anthropological Quarterly 2016-07-01)

"Cold War Anthropology forces the reader to confront in blunt detail the ways in which ethnographic work exists in tandem with political-economic forces, especially the agendas of funding bodies and special interests. It is a book I encourage anthropologists everywhere to read, but, more importantly, to discuss its implications with colleagues and students." (Joseph Anderson LSE Review of Books 2016-07-19)

"With regard to US anthropology, perhaps no other scholar has done more to unsettle the by now defunct representation of the anthropologist as hero than David H. Price." (Sindre Bangstad Anthropology of This Century 2016-10-01)
