Il giovane ne è avvilito come se fosse una colpa di cui si è macchiato: tanto più che i suoi migliori amici sono tutti impegnati al fronte. Ai primi casi di polio, Cantor reagisce come se badare ai ragazzi fosse il suo modo di prestare servizio per la patria: rifiuta di chiudere il campo, anzi fa di tutto per evitare che si diffonda il panico e che la paura modifichi gli stili di vita delle persone.
