The first edition of Pavement Analysis and Design was published in 1993. The widespread adoption of this book by so many colleges as an undergraduate or graduate text has encouraged me to write this second edition. A major event during the past decade was the completion of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), which led to the development of the highly publicized 2002 Pavement Design Guide. However, at the time of this writing, the final draft of the 2002 Guide is still not available. It will likely be a few more years before the Guide is approved and implemented by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). For this reason, only a brief preview of the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is presented, in an appendix.

Other than those improvements in the computer programs that necessitate changes in the text, not much is changed in the theoretical part of this book. Although new procedures were developed by SHRP for material characterization and pavement evaluation, these procedures, such as Superpave, are still in the developmental stage and will be subject to change as more experience is gained in their use. In this second edition, Superpave is presented in an appendix. To extend the usefulness of the book, a new appendix on Pavement Management System is added. It is hoped that a more extensive revision will be made in the third edition, after the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is fully implemented and all the testing and evaluation procedures are finalized. Major changes made in this edition are the following:

The floppy disk containing the four DOS programs is replaced by a CD containing a Windows program called KENPAVE, which combines the original KENLAYER, LAYERINP, KENSLABS, and SLABSINP into a single package, together with the addition of some computer graphics. The software was written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and can be run on any computer with Windows 95 or higher. Detailed instructions on the use of KENPAVE can be found in the software program.

Section 13.5 on the AASHTO method of overlay design has been totally revised. The 1986 AASHTO Design Guide was used in the first edition. The guide was revised in 1993 with practically no change in the design of new pavements, but the design of overlay was completely rewritten.

New developments and information from the literature have been added to keep the book current. A new method based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has been added in KENLAYER for nonlinear analysis, and new comparisons age made between KENLAYER and the latest Windows version of MICH-PAVE.

Three new appendices have been added: Appendix D—An Introduction to Superpave; Appendix E—Pavement Management Systems; and Appendix F—A Preview of 2002 Design Guide. Appendix C is combined with Appendix B; a new Appendix C contains a brief description of KENPAVE.

To provide room for the above additions, Sections 3.4.3 (on contained rock asphalt mats) and 10.5 (on probabilistic computer programs) have been deleted. Also deleted from the appendices are the description of the input programs and the programming details of KENLAYER and KENSLABS, such as subroutines and flowcharts. The description of input and output parameters in Chapters 3 and 5 and the illustrative examples in the appendices also have been removed, because they can now be found in the software program.

I wish to acknowledge gratefully the contribution of my colleague, Dr. Kamyar C. Mahboub, who wrote the appendices on Superpave and Pavement Management Systems. These new additions broaden the scope of this book and make it more suitable for a wider audience. I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to AASHTO, the Transportation Research Board, the Federal Highway Administration, the Asphalt Institute, the Portland Cement Associations, and many others who have permitted the use of the information they developed. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Jane for her support in the use of our retirement time on this book.

The pavement design bible

So what I can say about this book? It's simply the best. From very basic to advance pavement design, this book is full of theroetical concerns about the pavement design as well as empirical methods for special pavements. It also includes a software to simulate a road different layers behaviour when loads applied on top. Very useful and, in my opinion, a must-have for those engineers who work in this bussiness.

It is a very detailled text-book containing full description of the methods used. It distributes also the KENPAVE software which is the State-of-the-Art software for Pavements. It also cites and criticizes the Westergaard's solution as it has been reconsindered by Ioannides et al. It is absolutely necessary for the engineers occupying with science and practice.

Just Right

It starts off a little slow but ends very strong.

The last two chapters were very entertaining and instructive.

There are not very many variations (I'm not a big John Nunn fan) which I liked, as it keeps you focused
on the topic.

The material was not too basic or too advanced.

For the most part, complete games were presented.

It is the first Beim book I've read, and would now like to read his other books.

The Kindle edition has at least 3 errors in it that shouldn't be there.
1. Topalov - Kramnik Linares 1998 had the wrong diagram position - it used the last example diagram instead.
2. Kramnik - Nunn Germany 1994 Black's 20th move should be c6 not e6.
3. Smyslov - Tal Bled 1959 - There should be a pawn on h2.

So the proofreader(s) or the software used to convert from book to kindle only gets 2-3 stars.

It took me 20.5 hrs to finish the book.

Genzken, the recent subject of a major retrospective at MoMA, offers a highly original interpretation of modernist, avant-garde, and postminimalist practices even as she engages pressing sociopolitics and economic issues of the present.

These illustrated essays address the full span of Genzken's work, from the elegant floor sculptures with which she began her career to the assemblages, bursting with color and bristling with bric-a-brac, that she has produced since the beginning of the millennium. The texts, by writers including Yve-Alain Bois, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, and the artist herself, consider her formation in the West German milieu; her critique of conventions of architecture, reconstruction, and memorialization; her sympathy with mass culture; and her ongoing interrogation of public and private spheres. Unrealistic

Since this book is getting such hugely mixed reviews, I thought I would toss in my two cents' worth.

First of all, if you can take this as a romantic fantasy with more than a bit of kink, you'll like Homecoming just fine. If you're looking for realistic characters, a solid plot and a healthy relationship, you will NOT find it here.

The story takes place over a tiny span of days; though the timing is a bit vague, it was probably less than a week from beginning to end. Dane comes home from three years in the military to join his father, new stepmother, and new step-brother and immediately starts putting the moves on his new "brother." Dane says he wants them to bond and be close, and they'll go off to the same college in a few weeks where they can live together. Meanwhile, the dominant, possessive side of Dane starts to show.

Please note, this is not a true BDSM relationship, where the characters discuss limits and safewords and practice safe sex. It's also not anything like an actual gay relationship, because Dane has very specific ideas about being "the husband" in a relationship, and his partner would be "the wife" and stay at home, taking care of him, doing all the housework, being absolutely submissive in all ways, including the sex.

Spoilers ahead.

As a kinky fantasy, this book hits all the buttons. Rough sex, forced chastity, some spanking, bondage that includes ropes and duct tape and sweaty socks as gags. There are pages of foot worshipping...in great detail...detail that included sights and smells and I - not being into foot fetish - was fairly revolted and had to skip ahead quite a bit. The author REALLY likes the term "baby batter," and has a tendency towards other word choices that pulled me out of the moment because I found them NOT sexy. Also kind of horrific, Dane talks about their future, and how he'll leave Lucas in bondage for hours at a time, while he goes off to class or work. And all I could think of was how Lucas could take ill and choke to death on his own sick, or die in a tragic fire that he couldn't escape because he was all tied up. You really have to overlook the complete lack of basic BDSM standards to enjoy this book. Also not sexy was how ridiculously submissive Lucas became in a handful of days; giving up all autonomy, independence and self-respect because he lusts after his new step-brother's body.

Overall, the book is fine for a dose of heavy kink. There's lots of sex, some of it hot, some of it interesting. There's a tiny bit of romance. The grammar and editing were fine; there was an attempt at a plot beyond the kink. Just don't expect too much else.

I gave this at least two stars because it was understandable and didn't have a truck ton of grammatical errors that books in this genre are often littered with.
I couldn't give it more, however, because I honestly just didn't like it. I only made it about half way through before I returned it.
As mentioned in the sypnosis, the story is about the relationship between an 18 year old boy and his stepbrother that develops when the latter comes home from the Marines.
I wasn't offended by the slight BDSM or their relation through marriage, but pretty much everything else bothered me.
I didn't like how, as opposed to being dominating, the older brother was completely controlling. There's a difference between being sexually dominate and trying to control someone's life.
I also didn't like how the older brother expected the younger to basically take on the role of his housewife. I understand if that's something someone wants to do, but it just seemed so strict and kind of weird.
If you're into insta-love and the controlling dominant/damsel in distress submissive thing, then give this a shot! If not, carry on.

Kind of brutal almost and a bit violent - Mr. Kennedy's books all seem to be about the same - so read 1 and if you like his style and content then read more - When I realized that all of his books were basically the same I stopped. The Homecoming was one of the strangest

Worth the read

I usually don't review books because everyone's tastes are different. This one is well worth reading however. It's not a think positive book, although that is important. It's a book about dealing with your circumstances in a constructive way. He outlines strategies that help you to think about why you are doing the things you do. His simple approach is straight forward. There are no blanket promises of think it and you can do it. Rather, he clearly defines things that can keep you stuck where you don't want to be, ways to think about solutions, and offers solutions that have worked for him. I will be rereading this one.

The keys to unlocking your potential

When an author, in this case Derek Doepker, has the courage to open himself to the reader with a paragraph like the following: `I am regular guy who used to be out of shape, broke, and struggling to find answers to life's big questions. After years of study and thousands of dollars spent on education from the world's leading experts in psychology, neuroscience, spirituality, and personal development, I applied many great concepts to my own life. And... nothing much happened. At least not until I discovered a few more key insights that tied everything together into a concise system' - when an opening such as that occurs, that author has automatically placed himself in a position of trust. He warmly offers a `been there, done that' background that may seem incredible when you see the number of successful books on health and fitness and writing and marketing what you write he has published, books on many forms of motivational insights. But it is just that manner of approach that makes him immediately honorable, trustworthy, and friend-worthy.

This book is about getting `un-stuck' - overcoming the fear of success by exploring the potential we all must nurture. He offers The 3 keys to freedom from being stuck are awareness, appreciation, and action (choice). And from that starting point he builds our sense of self worth by tapping into our own inner strength, understanding our behavior patterns, our responses to stress, how to deal with our fears, how to in essence cope with those around us, mold what it is we want and achieve it. He fills his book with memorable statements such as `If you can fix something, it's not a problem. If you can't fix something, it's not worth making it a problem. ` `Your experience of life results from your perception, and you can always choose your perception. Therefore, you can always choose your experience of life. ` `The fate of your world rests in your hands. ` 'The more you try to fit in, the less you appreciate how we're all unique. He lists the 6 human needs: 1. Certainty (safety, comfort) 2. Uncertainty (excitement, variety) 3. Love (connection) 4. Significance 5. Growth 6. Contribution. And in response he adds, 'I want to point out that the most potent motivator is that of genuine love. And this kind of love is most closely associated with contribution (love for others) and growth (love for yourself) as opposed to the love that's associated with connection - although that's a great motivator, too.'

To attempt to summarize all the information Derek Doepker share in this book is better countered with simply an encouragement to read it for yourself. And that, friend, is a beginning I'm sure Derek would sanction! Grady Harp, September 13

Great book for analyzing and resolving your problems

This is a different success motivation book. It presents principles and tactics to handle ANY life's problems that are thrown at you against your will and how to successfully handle them.

You are the boss of you and you can re-frame how you react to things to maintain a positive attitude or you can be the victim complaining to people who ever will listen and stay in that victim mode. It sets up as being helpless and people need to take care of you. That is a tactic always guaranteed to fail or you can take care of yourself, always guaranteed to work. YOU GET TO CHOOSE, SO CHOOSE WISELY
