Poorly written, adds nothing meaningful to his first book

I read Healing the Family Tree way back when it first came out and it added an important dimension to my prayer life. I eagerly awaited this, but ended up throwing it in the recycle in disgust. McAll is a very poor writer. It was only the power of the new ideas he put in his first book that made it so compelling. This book added nothing new and it is so badly written that it isn't even a good review of the material. I wish they'd skipped this project and instead put time into publishing a new, well-written edition of Healing the Family Tree.

Now I'm a devout Catholic and realize there is much going on unseen in the realm of the spirit. I also believe there is a true place for generational healing, but this book strikes me as weird and presumptive. The ideas presented as causes of illnesses come across as over- simplistic, naive and rather insulting. It's hard to believe this is a modern-day medical doctor speaking!? The Catholic part valuing the Sacraments as vehicles of healing and peace are orthodox and down to earth. The two parts together don't feel right. BTW, the author shown on Amazon for this book is given as someone other than Dr. Kenneth McAll.

Jervis begins by describing the process of perception (for example, how decision makers learn from history) and then explores common forms of misperception (such as overestimating one's influence). Finally, he tests his ideas through a number of important events in international relations from nineteenth- and twentieth-century European history.

In a contemporary application of Jervis's ideas, some argue that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 in part because he misread the signals of American leaders with regard to the independence of Kuwait. Also, leaders of the United States and Iraq in the run-up to the most recent Gulf War might have been operating under cognitive biases that made them value certain kinds of information more than others, whether or not the information was true. Jervis proved that, once a leader believed something, that perception would influence the way the leader perceived all other relevant information.

To be concise (which Jervis seems to be incapable of) I'll say that if you can get through the extraneous prose, amazing overuse of passive voice, and massive run on sentences it's a great book. It was like reading a Medieval scroll of truly revolutionary International Relations concepts.

Drawing on his own extensive research and many fascinating interviews, Coltrane explodes many of the common myths about shared parenting, provides first-hand accounts of men's and women's feelings in two-job families, and reveals some innovative solutions that couples have developed to balance job and family commitments. Readers will find an insightful discussion of precisely how and why family life has changed, what forms it may take in the future, and what new kinds of fathers may be on the horizon. The author firmly places these questions within a broad contextual framework. He provides, for instance, an illuminating history of the family that shows that, far from being a fixed structure, the family has always adapted to changing economic, social, and ideological pressures. And by examining how families operate in a variety of non-industrial societies, he demonstrates that our own notions of gender-specific work and parenting roles are culturally rather than biologically determined, and thus inherently flexible. And indeed these roles are changing. Attempting broadly to survey issues surrounding men as partners, husbands, and fathers, this text has a major flaw that stems from the author's embrace of a dogmatic feminist approach to masculinity. Coltrane (coeditor of Sociology of Marriage and the Family, Nelson-Hall, 1995. 4th ed.) synthesizes a tremendous amount of sociological material, mostly secondary sources post-1980. He also has interviewed couples in search of practical solutions to domestic inequalities, making many valid points, e.g., "when men and women share family work, the entire society benefits." But Coltrane loses his grip when he offhandedly dismisses Robert Bly's work as "mythopoetic separatism," an interpretation based on media misrepresentation. He is generally dismissive of men's issues, simply stating, for example, that "giving custody to unwed fathers will make women's and children's lives even more difficult." A lot of attention has been focused recently on the role of the father in the family. Companies have established policies on paternity leave, newspapers feature articles on househusbands, and parenting magazines now target male readers. On the other hand, the public's perception of fathers who take time out to help raise families and assist with household duties is likely to be colored by sitcom plots and Mr. Mom caricatures. Now Coltrane, coauthor of Sociology of Marriage and the Famil y (1991) and assistant sociology professor at University of California at Riverside, takes an in-depth, serious look at the role of the male in the family. He documents the historical division of labor between husband and wife before investigating shared parenting practices that have become more commonplace in those families where two parents have jobs. Because research has previously involved mostly white, middle-class families, Coltrane also considers Mexican American households. He concludes with a look at social trends and attempts to predict their effect on the future of the family. David Rouse

Hypocrisy

Scott Coltrane is a hypocrite and this work is insincere. His scholarship calls for gender equity and paid leave for working parents, but now that he is the Interim President at University of Oregon, he has failed to put his beliefs into practice, by denying these benefits to graduate teachers.

Problem. As technology advances, architectural design methodology changes in response; most significantly the design process in recent years has been bolstered by computer technology, and digital fabrication. As this process often gives rise to non-rectilinear buildings, scrutiny continues over the appropriateness of the resultant architectural forms. In turn, this gives impetus to study the new forms generated for their effects on the inhabitants’ wellbeing. Neuroscientific studies show more positive responses to curved contoured objects than to sharp contoured objects (Bar and Neta 2006; Leder, Tinio and Bar, 2011), and more activation in the amygdala when subjects view images of sharp objects versus curved objects (Bar and Neta 2007). Nanda and Pati (2009) explored the relevance of the aforementioned studies to architecture and made a case for further research. A subsequent architectonic study suggests participants viewed curved architecture as more beautiful than its rectilinear counterpart (Vartanian et al., 2013). Method. The present study tested preference levels, using six sets of bipolar adjectives, of four different architectural geometries and building forms in an innovative semi-immersive virtual environment (“CAVEtte”), designed and built by the author and a collaborator. All four buildings chosen in the study were built “Maggie’s Centres” (cancer care centers) around the United Kingdom designed by different architects, all of whom were given the same architectural brief. The designs were digitally modeled in Rhino based on available plans, sections, elevations and images, and presented to 65 students and employees (19 females and 46 males) at NewSchool of Architecture + Design (NSAD). Each participant watched four walk-through videos, one of each building, in a randomly selected order. After each video, participants filled out a subjective survey. Due to limitations in the immersive experiment, a second similar study was conducted to ensure the limitations found did not affect the results. In the follow-up study, 20 new students and employees of NSAD were tested. In addition to both the immersive experiments, two 3-Second Surveys were conducted (one of abstract shapes, and the other of black and white images of the selected Maggie’s Centres) in an effort to triangulate the data. Results. An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare results between both immersive experiments and found there was no statistical difference among the curved, mixed and angled walk-through videos. However, there was a statistical difference found between Experiment 1 and 2 with regards to the rectilinear walk-through video. Due to the ANOVA results, the data presented is from Experiment 1 only. Overall, the immersive experiment findings suggest people prefer curved buildings to other geometric architectural interior environments. While these findings are consistent with the aforementioned contour-focused studies, there were some intriguing novel results when the data were parsed demographically along the lines of age, gender, education level, designers versus non-designers and years in the profession. These results demonstrate the need for future studies in a highly-immersive virtual environment to continue examining the effects of architectural contours at a physiological level. Additionally, while the 3-Second Black and White Survey slightly supported the hypothesis (the image of the mixed building was selected most, followed by the curved building), results from the 3-Second Shape Survey did not support the hypothesis, and in turn led to inconclusive results with room to examine potential limitations.
